“I had an idea about what a poem my husband wrote 11 years ago could become.
I chatted with some friends, got people together, and said, OK, I’m doing it.
Seven weeks later, I founded the Altrincham Storytelling Festival and produced a full-scale theatre production to a sold-out audience.”

How One Poem Turned Into a Theatre Production — and an Entire Storytelling Festival
Let Me Take You Back to Where It Started
Because a Year Earlier, There Was No Festival. No Theatre. No Cast. No Team. No funds.
I took an eleven-year-old poem, put it at the heart of a new theatre production, and built an entire Altrincham Storytelling Festival weekend around it.
I took conversations with friends and turned them into a creative team of 22 people — a theatre director, professional actors, a choir, live artists, writers, filmmakers and animators and an entire program of theatre, workshops and storytelling events.
But here’s the reality: good ideas don't produce themselves.
You still have to find the money.
Funding. Grants. Sponsors. Partnerships.
You still have to negotiate the fees, secure the venue, deal with agencies, volunteers, bring in local organisations, get the press interested and get the local authority behind it.
Yes, I had an idea, but I also had to put the infrastructure behind it, and by the time the Festival arrived, it felt as though the entire town had rallied around the idea.
The energy was magnetic.
But that was only still the part of the process…
Your idea isn't much of a production without an audience. You still need to sell the tickets.
I had no Festival mailing list.
No previous year to point to.
No established audience waiting for us to come back.
I had to find the audience too.
I took a Festival nobody had ever heard of and filled every event to full capacity.
The children's event sold out.
The theatre filled.
Each storytelling workshop filled.
Seven weeks after saying, ‘OK, I'm doing it’, the Altrincham Storytelling Festival opened its doors.
Now, if you've got an idea of your own but don't have the time, resources or experience to make it happen, you don't need another meeting about it.
You need a producer who knows how to get things done -in other words, you need someone exactly like me!
