So, my late husband, Alan Forrest Smith, and I started our professional publishing house - Master And Man Books to primarily publish our own books. Eventually, we found a route that works every time, from file to print, and as we did, we gradually started working with other writers like yourself.

That process includes every aspect you can dream about as an author. From publishing your book to promoting yourself, from seeing your books in every online bookstore and many offline shops on the high street, to getting attention or getting high-quality reviews for your book.

More FAQ: Your Publishing Questions Answered: Fees, Rights, Royalties and More

Will I own the rights to my book?
Yes. You retain ownership of your work and your worldwide rights. Publishing your book with Master And Man Books does not mean giving up ownership of it.
Who owns the copyright?
You do. As the author, you retain the copyright to your original work.
What if I want to change publishers?
You are free to change publishers. There is no early-exit penalty, subject to the terms of our publishing agreement.
How long will it take to publish my book?
It is difficult to estimate without seeing the manuscript, but as a general guide, if your manuscript is fully edited and ready for production, we aim to publish your book within 3–4 months. If your manuscript needs further editorial work, we'll discuss the additional time required before we begin.
Do you offer author advances?
No. My publishing services are fee-based. Rather than paying you an advance against future royalties, I operate on an agreed, upfront fee. You know exactly what you're paying for before work begins, and we agree on the arrangements for income from book sales as part of your publishing contract.
How much will I earn from book sales?
Your royalty arrangements will be set out clearly in your publishing agreement. The amount you receive depends on the agreed royalty rate and the net revenue generated from book sales after applicable printing, retailer and distribution costs. We'll explain the arrangements before you sign, so you know how your book sales income will be calculated and paid.
How much will it cost to publish my book?
Every book is different, so I quote each publishing project individually.
My publishing services start from £4,995, but it can be higher depending on what your manuscript needs.
For example:
- Is your manuscript complete and ready for production?
- Does it need editorial assessment, structural editing or rewriting?
- Will it require proofreading?
- What cover design and interior layout are needed?
- Are there illustrations, photographs, tables or other production requirements?
- What formats and editions are you planning to publish?
  Some books need relatively straightforward production. Others require substantial editorial and publishing work. I will assess your project, discuss your requirements and provide a quotation before you commit.
Will I have to buy a minimum number of books?
No. There is no compulsory bulk purchase or minimum order requirement.
Is cover design included?
Master And Man Books provides professional cover design as part of our publishing service. If you already have a cover or would prefer to arrange your own design, we can discuss that too.
What if my manuscript still needs editing or proofreading?
In my experience, almost every manuscript needs some level of editorial work before publication, even those that have already been edited. The extent of that work varies from book to book. We'll assess your manuscript, discuss what it needs and agree on the work and costs in advance. You don’t have to worry about the production details; I will take care of the entire editorial process, including editing and proofreading, so you don't have to find and manage separate editors yourself.
Where will my book be available?
Your book will be available for ordering through thousands of online retailers and book wholesalers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble, through our publishing distribution channels.
Can I buy copies of my own book at a discount?
Yes. You can order author copies at the applicable printing rate rather than paying the retail price.
