Page to Stage: The Art of Bringing Stories to Life [Podcats]

There’s a moment, sitting in the theatre, half-convinced it was a good idea to come, and then it happens. Your tiredness drifts away. You’re alert, engaged. Suddenly, an actor delivers a line and the entire audience gasps… then bursts into applause.

What is that?

As a member of the audience, I don’t think about the technical moments — I just enjoy the show.

But as a writer, I’m intrigued by the possibility of giving stories an alternative medium to deliver their message.

And that’s where theatrical production becomes truly exciting.

So, back to the question…

What is it about theatre that connects so deeply with an audience — that makes every cell of your being feel completely immersed in the story?

You might be watching a performance adapted from words written centuries ago, yet the message feels utterly relevant, resonating with today’s world. Or you could be watching an adaptation by a 21st-century writer.

Either way, you leave feeling moved, inspired — maybe even changed. Or perhaps not profoundly transformed, but still question everything, reflect more.

Beyond entertainment, theatre has the power to impact an audience in ways few other art forms can.

But it all begins with great writing, powerful storytelling, and the vision of a creative director who can translate those words into living, breathing moments on stage.

As we’ve been working behind the scenes to bring one of Alan Forrest Smith’s powerful narratives to life — under the direction and production of Nigel Hurvey — our conversations turned to the very heart of it all: the art of storytelling, the stories that resonate, and the importance of bringing them to life.

In this special episode, Nigel draws on over 25 years of experience to lift the curtain on how powerful stories come alive on stage — and how theatre can move people and spark real change.

If you’re a writer with a story to tell, you’ll find this episode especially inspiring.

Enjoy — and don’t forget to explore our blog for more insights on storytelling.
