Allowing The Flow

A Writer’s Journey

Part 1. Staring at The Blank Page

Part 2.Sit Down and Write.

Part 3. Allowing the flow

As I give you the update on my latest writing, my book is really taking shape. It’s actually taken a different direction than I thought. Characters have appeared, and some have taken a back seat more than I thought would be in the front. And now the story has grown much larger than I was thinking.

In other words, it’s the story had I given a lot of thought but it’s starting to take a far more dystopian shape.

So what do you do if your book starts to flow in a different direction?

My advice is to keep your head down and allow your mind to flow the way it feels it needs to go.

I simply keep my head down, allow the words and stories to take shape, and keep on writing. No stops, no overthinking just keep the flow moving.

Another note on the flow of writing.

The flow has an energy, a dynamic to it. Changing the energy source of anything can be a disaster. I feel it’s the same with writing stories. If the flow is stopped you will find when you try and restart it, the flow of energy can be very different.

I write until I feel the energy dissipate. Then and only then do I leave the page and come back to it the next day.

This way I leave on a thought rather than a dead stop moment.

In just over a week I am 20,019 words in. My feeling is an 80-100,000 word book for this one but I will allow the flow to dictate the size.
